Top five places for a summer getaway in Paris
A local bistro with chequered tablecloths, a village with a South-Western atmosphere, a Neapolitan pizzeria or an Ardèche ice cream… How about taking advantage of this special summer, without foreign tourists, to get a change of scenery within Paris?
Forced to slash the kilometres to their holiday destination, this summer, during the Covid era, the French will have to take a change of scenery without moving. In Paris, tourists have not yet returned, providing the perfect opportunity to discover the capital differently. As if we were on holiday. In the heart of Paris or just a stone’s throw from the capital city, explore our summer selection of beautiful and sometimes still confidential gourmet addresses.
A 100% “terroir” bistro
With its benches and its red and white chequered tablecloths, the P’tit Canon is a timeless place in the heart of the Batignolles, with an extra terrace this summer. Grégoire Devenyns and Thomas Joubert took over this neighbourhood bistro a few months ago to turn it into a simple, welcoming and above all very food-friendly place. Perfect for playing the American tourist and revisiting its classics of the best of French brasserie among potatoes stuffed with pig’s trotters, homemade country terrine, Charolais rib of beef, crème brûlée or profiteroles.
Le P’tit Canon, 36 rue Legendre 75017 Paris. Phone : 01 47 63 63 87.
A real Naples pizza, in Paris
To be healthy and digestible, does a pizza dough have to be elastic and thin like in Naples or crunchy like in Rome? The answer is on the other side of the périphérique, in Montreuil, at Metà e Metà. Together with the restaurants Merrigio (Paris 9th) and Damigiana (Paris 1st), where Laura and Bastien Corinti have given their vision of authentic Italian cuisine and pride in their local specialities, the couple opened this joint and its large terrace just before the lockdown. The menu, short and efficient, offers 8 pizzas with a choice of “rossa” (with tomato sauce from San Marzano) or “bianca”. Special highlight is the Cetarese, a pizza with San Marzano tomato sauce, capers, stracciatella, anchovies, taggiache olives, oregano and fresh basil.
Metà e Metà, 51 rue du Capitaine Dreyfus, 93100 Montreuil. Tel: 01 48 32 50 99.
A South-Western breeze on the Seine riverside
Last year, Au Trinquet, a famous venue in the 16th arrondissement devoted to the South-Western vibe and Basque pelota, expanded its services to create a unique spot that focuses on welcoming atmosphere and well-being: Trinquet Village. A place open to the outdoors on the banks of the Seine, where it’s great to eat, exercise, laugh, meet people… And this year more than any other, to enjoy meeting others again.
You go there for the beautiful selection of food-trucks planned by “Le Comptoir des Marchés”, the open-air bar’s atmosphere and its barbecue and paella evenings. With its XXL space (9,000m2 including a 400 m2 terrace), Le Trinquet Village is definitely THE South-West spot of the season… less than 5 kilometres from the Eiffel Tower.
Trinquet Village, 8 quai Saint-Exupéry, 75016 Paris. Tel. 01 71 73 62 85.
Marseille in the heart of the Marais
Throughout this summer – until 16 August – the Phocaean city is exhibiting its best addresses to help Parisians discover the richness of its identity, between history, art of living, avant-gardism and modernity. In the aisles of the BHV Marais, around thirty “made in Marseille” brands such as Maison Empereur, Sessùn, Honoré, Père Blaize, la Savonnerie du Midi and Ricard have been chosen by the department store in collaboration with the Marseille Metropolitan Tourist and Convention Bureau. In addition, visitors will also enjoy an exhibition of photographs of Marseille, with its turquoise waters and sunshine. The only thing missing is the delightful smell of bouillabaisse to make you think you’re on the Canebière.
Le BHV Marais, 52 rue de Rivoli, 75004 Paris. Phone : 09 77 40 14 00.
On the left bank, an ice-cream with Ardèche flavours
And to enjoy fully the summer heat, what better than an icy sweet to cool down? Head to rue Soufflot, in the Latin Quarter’s heart, to discover the Fabrique Givrée’s new products. It’s difficult to choose between all these flavours that invite you to travel! Chef Jérémie Runel’s artisanal and “ice-cream-dining” creations are created in the Ardèche département using 100% natural and seasonal local ingredients. Apricots come from the Drôme, figs from Uzès, fir shoots from the Vercors and pears from the hills of Lyon. You will fall for the brand’s star ice cream: the “Marron d’Ardèche”, made with an incredible PDO chestnut cream from Imbert. A true journey.
La Fabrique givrée, 26 rue Soufflot, 75005 Paris. Every day from 10:30 am to 10:30 pm.
