Macron and Merkel want to promote Franco-German unity

German Chancellor Angela Merkel was invited by French President Emmanuel Macron to the summer residence of Fort de Brégançon, in the Var department (southeastern France) on Thursday, August 20. They openly showed the unity between the two countries.

As planned, Emmanuel Macron received Angela Merkel at the Fort de Brégancon, in the city of Bormes-les-Mimosas, to strengthen the Franco-German couple’s partnership. After Britain’s Theresa May (2018) and Russia’s Vladimir Putin (2019), the German Chancellor is the third leader to be invited by the French Head of State.

Emmanuel Macron and Angela Merkel met for a working session on European and international recent issues. They covered questions such as the coronavirus, the political crisis in Belarus and the coup d’état in Mali.

The two leaders displayed visible complicity, showing a Franco-German couple united politically.

European leadership required to address the coronavirus crisis

The Head of State and his German counterpart are facing the crises shaking Europe with “strong convergence.” Emmanuel Macron told the pass that “Germany and France cooperate in the most effective way when they define common goals.”

The coronavirus pandemic is one crisis at the heart of the world’s concerns. They consider strong cooperation between European countries necessary to deal with it.

The President of the French Republic also said that Paris and Berlin stressed above all the need to agree, “on a common foundation”, regarding measures taken at the borders.
