The masks are a real godsend for the French major retailers. Since May 4th, they have already sold 300 million euros worth of masks, according to market research specialist Nielsen.

“With 14 million euros during the week of August 17th to 23rd, the turnover generated by supermarkets” for the sale of masks “has now reached the 300 million euro mark since May 4th,” Nielsen states in a press release.

These figures apply to disposable and washable masks sold in hypermarkets, supermarkets, drive-throughs and convenience stores.

The sales “are going up again, which should be confirmed this week and next week with the start of the new school year”. The masks are now mandatory for all adults at school, and for all pupils from secondary school onwards.

In July, Nielsen had carried out a study showing that “98% of French people” now have masks at home, whether surgical or made of washable fabric. “With significant storage sometimes: 15% of households with surgical masks have over 50 of them at home,” the specialist said.
